Close your eyes, and transport yourself for a moment to the beauty of the Danish coast. Here, the winds whip themselves over rocks and sands. Here, castles loom on the horizons, the white sails of ships sway on distant waves, and the scent of the sea moves over the land. Here, history meets modernity, the land meets the sky, and all we know meets all we hope for.

Since 2017, the striking island of Zealand has been home to Smykke Copenhagen; a contemporary Danish jewellery brand which aims to weave the natural beauty of Scandinavia into new, elegant, dream-like forms. Our mission is to capture something of the essence of this land - the heritage, the patterns and icons of the past, the spirit of those who have inhabited it - and bravely drive it into the future, where it can meld with the effortless style of the modern woman.

At its heart, Smykke Copenhagen is a celebration of contemporary Danish craftsmanship. Our inspiration comes from the earth beneath our feet, the endless sea which cuts its way beneath the sky. The Nordic amber, the silver, the gold… these are the foundations of what we create, and from these raw materials, we craft items of exquisite beauty and daring, cutting-edge, fearless fashion.

However, our journey is not one we take alone - our brand, our designs, and our creations have come about as a result of collaborating with other, like-minded talents from around the world, and being inspired by objects of beauty and visions of perfection from others, too. We are jewellery lovers as much as we designers, and we'll never stop being inspired by those who share our passion for modern femininity, flawless materials, and who take inspiration from the beauty of nature and the dynamism of our cities.

    A Reimagining of Scandinavian Style

In many ways, that sense of looking beyond our borders may just be the essence of 21st Scandinavian design. Across the last century, northern European fashion and jewellery were all about the minimal, the local, the reductive, and about walking a singular path - and it doubtlessly achieved something unique and deeply inspirational. Smykke Copenhagen, however, wants to build upon that foundation, and expand the potential and possibilities of what modern Danish women’s jewellery can and should be. More colour, more innovation, more outward-looking approaches; we want to reflect the identity of the Smykke Woman - she who is as comfortable looking out across the endless sea as she is confidently walking the streets of Copenhagen, and the streets of cities far beyond.

In order to achieve this inimitable contemporary style, Smykke Copenhagen made the decision to seek out those who share our values, and take inspiration from designers who also blend a passion for nature with an instinct for contemporary, urbane style.

    The Wonder of MIKIMOTO

We knew from the beginning that pearls were to form much of the heart and soul of Smykke Copenhagen jewellery. What could be more feminine, more indicative of the beauty of nature, more timeless, after all, than a pearl? Our search for pearlescent perfection led us to the studios of MIKIMOTO in Japan, and this famed design house gave us much of the inspiration and spark we needed to make Smykke what it is today. We may be a world apart from one another, but through our designs, both Smykke Copenhagen and MIKIMOTO have been able to harness something of the spirit of the sea.

For those who know about pearls, MIKIMOTO is something of a legend. It’s a name which has become synonymous with the blending of timeless elegance and contemporary, forward-thinking fashion (which neatly sums up the Smykke Copenhagen approach to jewellery design, too), and is the source of the finest cultured pearls available today. Founded by Kokichi Mikimoto over a century ago, the company was born as a result of Mikimoto creating the world’s first ever cultured pearls. Mikimoto was a man who straddled the worlds of artistry and science, and his memory lives on through the company which continues to produce pearls in his name.

Japan and Denmark are about as far apart as its possible to get. However, both Smykke Copenhagen and MIKIMOTO share the sea as a source of inspiration, and we both consider the pearl to be the perfect symbol for a modern, stylish femininity which looks to the future, while having one foot placed elegantly in the past.

    Breathing Life into Metals

In order to bring our designs to life, we needed to find a talented goldsmith - someone who had not merely the skills to shape our vision into being, but who deeply understood the identity and ambitions of the Smykke woman. We were searching for an artisan who could weave wonders from their hands, and who could transform the flawless beauty of Nordic metals into something that does the raw material justice.

This artisan came in the form of Keiko Ono, a Tokyo-born goldsmith and jewellery creative. From the very beginning, it was clear to the team at Smykke Copenhagen that Keiko had what it takes to allow our ideas to come to life, and to combine the materials we had sourced with the modernity and dynamism of the items we had dreamt up. Her forty years of experience at the top of her field had awarded Keiko a rare skill: the ability to combine her own unique style with the meticulous details of her clients’ requests, and to create jewellery which blends simplicity with sophistication - something deeply in line with what Smykke constantly strives to achieve.

    A Meeting of Worlds

Smykke Copenhagen is a jewellery brand which champions the unique, the individual, the bold. It’s a collection of beautiful and elegant items which are made with the contemporary Danish woman in mind; a woman who is confident in her choices, and whose passions are split between the tranquillity of the coast, and the buzz of the urbane.

By taking inspiration from the pearl jewellery of MIKIMOTO, and by collaborating with the deft fingerwork and undeniably skill of Keiko Ono, Smykke has been able to forge a series of stunning items of jewellery which bring together two worlds, in more ways than one. Smykke is a meeting of the past and the present, of the classic with the contemporary, of the vintage with the avant-garde. Smykke Copenhagen is deeply Scandinavian in its conception and inspiration, utterly global in its execution. Smykke Copenhagen is the meeting of the land with the sea, of the West with the East, and it brings together the stylish women of Copenhagen and beyond, with items of stunning jewellery that they will cherish.
